Bing

This is a description of Stephen Bing, first in the LA Times and now (allegedly) in an RNC memo on MoveOn.org:

Bing, Who Enjoys Strip Clubs And Las Vegas Casinos, Lives In Two-Bedroom Bel-Air Home But Bought Seven Adjoining Houses With Plan Of Demolishing Them To Create “Palatial Grounds.” “A determined bachelor, he lives in a small two-bedroom home in Bel-Air but has bought the seven adjoining houses with the intention of knocking them down and creating palatial grounds. He’s a fan of strip clubs, has been a high roller in Las Vegas for years, and yet he can discuss the dense Robert Caro biography of Lyndon Johnson.â

OMG! He can discuss a book!

An actual book!

The horror!

NOW I want to meet this guy.

Um...not to rain on your parade of anti-republicanism but I think that portion of the memo is just a bunch of copy/paste from other sources. If you notice, the same point is raised three times in the same paragraph, and the same sentence appears twice, the second time with minor reworking. That coupled with the newspaper credit means that 1)Whoever formed this memo sucks at proofreading and 2) the point was raised before by Rachel Abramowitz on 7/3/02. Its meant to show that he (Bing) is a man who loves himself some gambling and some "gentelemens" clubs and yet still enjoys a bit of the ol' readings. Since it'd be weird to just copy the portion of the sentence that would be good for an ad hominem attack, the LBJ book comment stays.

ad hominem... I'm so proud I could cry...

What I thought was interesting was the idea that, in someone's train of rethorical thought, it was a right an propoer thing to link the sin of going to a strip club with the sin of being an intellectual (with the sin of LBJ). It is, in it's way, a masterful sentence.

Actually, the whole thing is a nice piece of marketing agitprop including the use of the words "palatial" (evokes weathly, self-absorbed elite), "determined bachelor" (often a code word for gay, here I think its there to show he is anti-family), Strip-club (sin), "high roller" (rich sin), Vegas (sin city!), "dense" (intentionally hard to read so dont feel stupid if you couldn't get though it, or better yet never heard of it) Robert Caro biography (left coast intellectual), LBJ (Satan).

As I said, materful.
